When we
think about tubal ligation reversal surgery we think of the woman or the “patient”
having the surgery. What we seldom think about is the husband and the range of
emotions that he has.
Recently
reading a tubal reversal husband's story that was very heartwarming, I began to think
about things. How the reversal journey changes them as husbands. They worry about the same things that their wives do. They may not
express it the same way, but they certainly have feelings and emotions that can
be quite startling.
One of the
biggest things is the worry when a man’s wife heads into surgery. Although they
can be told that everything will be fine, there is still fear. As they wheel
his spouse away for the surgery room there are many thoughts taking place. Will
she actually be okay? Is this surgery really worth it if it means something
happening to her? I can’t imagine my life without her. The minutes tick by like
hours. And finally he receives word that she is out of surgery and doing just
fine. He breathes a deep sigh of relief.
As he is
escorted to see his wife he just wants to see for himself that she is okay. She
may be a bit pale and still sleeping. He wants to talk to her. Having just
woken from surgery she may be groggy and not quite fully awake. This, of
course, can cause alarm in the most masculine of men.
Once his
spouse is released back to the hotel room he has some unease. He will be the
only one with her. What if something happens? While his spouse was in surgery he was receiving specific instructions for monitoring his wife during recovery and knowing that he can always call for any questions or concerns. All of these instructions have helped him breath a bit easier. He now knows what he needs to be aware of. This is a
huge role reversal; he is now responsible for monitoring his wife's care.
After she is
back home and getting into the swing of things life begins to return to normal.
This husband is now beginning to relax a bit and realizes just what his wife
has gone through to have a child with him. He has a new view on things.
Time passes
and a baby or two is born. As the children grow he remembers how this all
started. He has projects that take place and the children help. This is the
family he has asked for and always wanted and always dreamt about.
It is
important to remember that men go through the tubal reversal journey just as we
women do. Men have their prayers and dreams answered too in the tubal reversal
journey.
